Costa Farms showcases new varieties at annual Season Premiere event

More than 200 Industry insiders sought this season’s newest plants on March 3 and 4 when Costa Farms opened its 2-acre trial garden for its annual Season Premiere. Attendees had the opportunity to check out 360 different plant varieties, of which 55% were new annual and perennial introductions, during the two-day event. A sneak peek of 2020-2021 plant introductions from 28 breeders around the globe were available, before the now cancelled California Spring Trials that was scheduled to take place in April.

“For the last 11 years, we’ve collaborated and engaged with global breeding companies to test and introduce new varieties to this category,” says Maria Costa Smith, executive vice president of horticulture and planning. “Our teams are dedicated to finding the top performers that will work for our customers and in consumers' homes.”

California Spring Trials 2020 cancelled

Concerns surrounding the coronavirus pandemic have cancelled the California Spring Trials lineup. CAST is an annual week-long event held in various locations throughout the state of California that showcases the newest plant varieties, outdoor trials, new merchandising and signage products and much more. As of print time, nearly all stops were cancelled.

Fire destroys structures at Dan and Jerry’s Greenhouses

According to CBSN Minnesota, fire crews responded to a large fire in Monticello, Minnesota, at Dan and Jerry’s Greenhouses on March 5. The firefighters discovered a total of four damaged greenhouses; two are unsalvageable and the other two have potential for repair.

No one was harmed in the incident.
